My childhood memories don't include cookies. I remember instead stainless steel pots towering above my head, filled with spicy stews that sputtered, making the lids rattle. There were hot pans that would send up plumes of steam, cloaking fish or maybe short ribs. Dessert was a few slices of pear, watermelon, or any fruit that happened to be in season.
